Thistledown Racino

Racing

The Thistledown Racino is a thoroughbred racetrack and casino located in North Randall, Ohio, in the outskirts of Cleveland.

The Thistledown racino has a one-mile dirt oval used for horse racing which has proven to be incredibly popular with guests. Today, the track is the home of the Ohio Derby and offers guests live entertainment, video casino games and much more.

Thistledown Racino History

The Thistledown racino came under the regulation of the Ohio Racing Commission in 1931 when it was first formed. In 2007, Thistledown’s parent company, Magna Entertainment, announced that they were selling the track due to staggering losses.

Three years later, the track was bought by Harrah’s Entertainment, now known as Caesars Entertainment, for $43 million in 2010. Two years after this, the State of Ohio ruled that racetracks could offer video lottery terminals (VLTs), boosting the track’s revenue. Several months later, Rock Ohio Caesars announced plans to invest $88 million to develop a racino at the site.

Plans involved transforming the main floor of the Thistledown into a large gaming space that would offer over 1,000 VLTs. Other plans included constructing a 60-seat restaurant, two-foot court outlets and a lounge. Rock Gaming then acquired the casino in 2015 and a year later announced that they and their casinos would rebrand under the Jack Entertainment brand.

The racino was closed for one day in March 2016 to transition to the new brand, which is why the racino is sometimes referred to as the Jack racino.

VLT Machines

Earlier on we mentioned before that the Rock Ohio Caesars had plans to expand the Thistledown racino by install over 1,000 VLTs. Well, they actually followed through with the plan and the casino now offers more than 1,400 video lottery terminals.

Some of the games featured at the Jack racino include Pac-Man Wild Edition, Dragon Link, Willy Wonka: World of Wonka, Lightning Link, 5 Dragons Grand, Harley Davidson and Ultimate Fire Link.

Horse Racing

Jack Thistledown

Many people visit the Thistledown racino to watch or bet on their famous horse races. However, horse racing is only offered at the Thistledown racino between April 30 and October 20.

It’s completely free to attend and visitors can catch horse races on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

In addition, the Jack racino also hosts the Ohio Derby which normally takes place in early October. If that isn’t enough, the racino offers simulcast racing from all over the United States all year round.

Restaurant and Entertainment

The Thistledown racino is also home to various restaurants and bars to keep visitors satisfied. The restaurants at Thistledown racino include the Millcreek Grille, which uses locally sourced ingredients, Italian restaurant Nonna Pazza, the famous American Burger Bar, the Diner and Steaks and Rings.

Thistledown is also home to two bars including Cleo’s, which offers world-class beer, wine and cocktails, and Centerbar which features nine large television screens and personal tabletop audio.

If that isn’t enough for you, Thistledown racino hosts regular events throughout the year. They can include a Slush bar or live performances from musicians or comedians. To find out what events the racino has scheduled, just visit Jack racino’s website.
